Geographical position

Koktebel is located on the eastern coast of the Crimea, washed by the Black Sea, 120 km from Simferopol, 340 km from Krasnodar and more than 1400 km from Moscow.

The resort of Koktebel lies on the shores of the bay of the same name, bounded from the west by the rocky peaks of Cape Malchin, from the east by the narrow ridge of Cape Chameleon. The settlement occupies the Koktebel basin, protected by the Kuchuk-Yanyshar and Biyuk-Yanyshar ridges, the Klementyev mountain, and the spurs of the Tatar-Khaburg hill. The semicircle of mountains is closed by the Kara-Dag volcanic massif, the territory of which is declared a natural reserve and is available as part of excursions. At the very foot of the extinct volcano, the Tepsen plateau stretches like an elevated terrace.

On the territory of Koktebel, waters are carried by small rivers that dry up for the summer. In the northern part of the village lies the bed of the Armutluk River, on which a small reservoir is formed. From the east, the small bays Mertvaya and Tikhaya adjoin the Koktebel Bay.

Natural landscapes in the vicinity of Koktebel are foothill steppe, overgrown with forbs and feather grass. Vineyards grow near the mountain ranges surrounding the resort. The jagged and rocky peaks of Kara-Dag are surrounded by oak forests and broad-leaved forests.

Climate

The climate of Koktebel is seaside-steppe, arid with mild winters and plenty of sun. Being advantageously surrounded by hills, the village is well protected from the winds. In general, the weather conditions in the resort are comfortable throughout the year.

Winter in Koktebel is mild, warm and short. The average January temperature is 3.5 °C. Sometimes Arctic air masses bring significant cooling. Spring in the resort is cool. March is rainy, warm sunny weather is set by the beginning of May.

Summers are hot, dry and long. The average temperature in July is 24°C. Clear and warm weather lasts until November. In the second half of September, the velvet season begins - a period when comfortable daytime temperatures are established, and the sea is still warm.

The swimming season in Koktebel lasts from June to September. The water temperature during this period fluctuates between 20-26 °C.
