The idea of holding an icebreaker festival in the Northern capital arose in 2014. The event, timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Russian icebreaker fleet, aroused great interest among St. Petersburg residents and tourists. This prompted the organizers to take the next step: to make the festival an annual event.
A unique holiday, in the center of which powerful ships crushing ice and supporting navigation in freezing water basins, attracts thousands of tourists. In 2019, the icebreaker festival in St. Petersburg starts for the sixth time, the opening date is scheduled for May 4th. The embankments of Lieutenant Schmidt and Angliyskaya turn into observation and festival platforms. It is from here that it is best to observe an unusual spectacle.

Icebreaker Festival in St. Petersburg 2019: holiday program

Festival days give a unique opportunity:

  • see the parade of icebreakers;
  • visit the decks of Arctic ships;
  • watch the spectacle of waltzing tugs and the light show.

According to the established tradition, the parade of icebreaking ships will open the event. The Arctic giants will sail solemnly, greeting the citizens of St. Petersburg and the guests of the city. An integral part of the festival program is sightseeing tours to icebreakers. Those who wish will be offered to climb the open decks of operating ships, touch the realities of naval life, and learn more about polar professions.
Concert performances, thematic lectures, film screenings, competitions, quests will be held at the coastal venues.
The waltz of the tugboats, which has firmly entered the annual program, is of keen interest to the audience. This spectacle takes place in the waters of the Bolshaya Neva. River tugs synchronously rotate on the water like toy boats, rebuild, circle in pairs, form a figure in the shape of a four-leafed flower, and again disperse. With the help of fire-extinguishing devices mounted on tugs, jets of water take off into the air, creating dancing fountains in the middle of the water surface. This action cannot be retold, it must be seen and enjoyed. In the evening, when the city plunges into twilight, the festive atmosphere will be created by cheerfully lit embankments and light shows.
