How to get from Venice to Burano. Burano island, italy

The islands of Murano and Lido are the most popular and famous among tourists.

If Lido is the beaches of the Adriatic Sea, and is known for its unsurpassed glassware, then Burano is famous for its lace, the best fish restaurant in Venice and colorful houses that can be photographed endlessly. On Burano you will find a cure for gray everyday life and take a mini-course of color therapy 🙂

1. How to get to Burano

The most convenient way to get to Burano is from the pier Fondamente Nove in the Cannaregio area. Need to sit on vaporetto line 12(route ships plying in the Venetian lagoon). Travel time 50 minutes.

Be careful, as several docks are located at the stop at once, to which motor ships moor, following different routes. It is easy to navigate: there is an electronic scoreboard with the departure time, line number and destination name, and the line numbers are written on the signs hanging above each dock.

2. Lace Burano

The island began to be settled in the 6th century for the same reason as other islands Venetian lagoon: the inhabitants of the northern provinces of the Roman Empire fled to these harsh marshy lands, fleeing the invasion of the barbarians. From time immemorial, Buranese men were engaged in fishing, and women repaired and wove gear. Women subsequently used their skills to make household items that decorate the interior, including lace weaving.

There are also a romantic version of the emergence of lace production on the island.

One day, a young guy engaged to a local girl went fishing. At sea, the siren tried to seduce him with her voluptuous songs, but the fisherman did not succumb to the charms of the seductive, but insidious creature (“I was seduced by the queen, but I did not succumb!”). For this, the siren, surprised by such steadfastness and fidelity, presented the young man with wedding lace woven from sea foam. Like it or not, history is silent. One thing is certain - the women of Burano learned how to weave the thinnest and most airy lace in the world and began to sheathe the Venetian nobility already in the 16th century.

Museum of ancient Buran lace Scuola del Merletto(address: Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi, 187) is located in the palazzo, which was once a school for lace makers and adjoined the Palazzo del Podesta, now the town hall. Opening hours: from 10.00 to 18.00, day off Monday. Ticket price: 5.50 € for adults, 4 € for children from 6 to 14 years old, free for children under 6 years old.

Burano lace can be bought in numerous shops scattered throughout the island. Today they feature lace, mostly machine-made. If you want to buy handmade products, we recommend the store La Perla(Via Galuppi 376, this is the main street of the island), where sometimes you can even see craftswomen at work.

3. Colorful houses of Burano

But it wasn't lace that made Burano so popular with tourists. First of all, of course, Burano is worth a visit for the unusually bright "candy" colors of the houses - from fuchsia to sky blue. On the island of Rialto, where the main Venice is located, you will not see such color magnificence and diversity!

According to local legend, houses were painted in rich hues and different colors so that fishermen could recognize their home when returning from the sea. Of course, there is also a deadly rational version that this was done to attract tourists to the island, but we categorically refuse to believe it. Let there be lace woven from sea foam, let there be fishermen who will not confuse their house with a neighbor's house after the sea's rolling and will not mistakenly look into someone else's wife.

Residents of Burano are required to maintain their homes in decent condition and constantly tint the facades if necessary. To paint in a certain color, they must obtain a special permit from the local authorities! Not only the appearance is important, but also the harmony of the color composition. Even the colors of the window sashes and the flowers decorating the window sills should be combined with each other.

Those who have been in Mexico, for example, in cities such as Merida and Campeche, will find a certain similarity between Burano and Mexican cities - there are also juicy, colorful, bright houses there, only there are not enough channels.

For comparison: colonial architecture in Merida, Mexico

Burano is a childhood dream come true. Pretty neat houses in rich, clean colors create the illusion of a doll town. I want to open the windows and look at the tiny bathrooms, kitchens, small sofas and chairs (of course, the locals may not like this 🙂).

Linen, as everywhere in Italy, is dried in full view. But in Burano it looks especially picturesque, as if linen here is also selected according to the color scheme and concept.

4. Sights of Burano

Burano is a small island, a couple of hours is enough to take a walk, take plenty of pictures, and buy lace for gifts.

All roads will lead you to the main square Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi, named after the most famous native of the island - the composer Baldassare Galuppi, who was nicknamed "buranello". There are many shops on the square where you can buy lace and clothes made from natural fabrics, ice cream shops and trattorias where you should definitely order some freshly caught fish dish.

Above the square and the whole island rises St. Martin's Church with a 52-meter bell tower, built in the 16th century.

Another interesting attraction is three bridges(Tre Ponti). This wooden bridge connects three canals and three of the island's most picturesque streets (Via Giudecca, Via San Mauro and Via San Martino Sinistro).

If you want to try the best fish in Venice, you can do it in Burano! Take a recommendation from Jaime Oliver himself and go to Al Gatto Nero da Ruggero(Via Giudecca, 88, on the same street is the fish market). This family-run trattoria serves homemade pasta and fresh fish and seafood dishes. And another plus is the price. Much lower than in Venice.

One of the days of our week-long stay in Venice was my daughter's birthday. She turned 4 years old. We wanted to make this day bright, colorful and memorable, so we decided to visit probably the most colorful island in the world - Burano.

How to get to Burano from Venice?

The most popular way is:

From the Fondamente Nove stop in the northern part of Venice, the N12 vaporetto floats to Burano. Leaves every 20 minutes. On the road for about an hour. Makes several intermediate stops.

We lived a stone's throw from the Zattere stop in Dorsoduro, south of Venice. From there we boarded the N6 vaporetto and sailed to Lido Island. There they transferred to the boat of the N14 line to Burano. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. From the Lido there is not a vaporetto, but enough big ship. It also makes several intermediate stops.

Because we lived in Venice for several days, then we bought vaporetto passes in advance on the Venezia Unica website. Travel to Burano is included in these passes. And so, a one-way ticket per person costs 7.5 euros.

Burano is a small island and you can explore it quickly enough. There are only a couple of thousand locals on the island. Main historical occupations: fishing for men, lace making for women. Now, probably, tinting their houses in bright colors, so that the flow of tourists who want to see and capture this beauty does not dry out). At the same time, all the details of the exterior are perfectly matched in the color combination: curtains, flowers, pots, doors, shutters..

Of the attractions in Burano there is the Museum of Lace and the Church of San Martino with Tiepolo's paintings. The island is also notable for its tilted campanile.

When approaching the island, our daughter perked up, because. when approaching the pier, one could already see bright unusual houses.

Already pretty tired of the concentrated beauty of Venice and daily walking tours 20 km long., unusual island attracted her.

It turned out to be easy to get the little traveler interested in exploring the island - we went looking for a pink house of the right shade and, thus, went around the whole island)

In advance, I identified several places for different tastes that I liked according to the description, menu and prices

Fritto Misto (at the pier)
Devil Pizza Via San Mauro, 24, 30142

Trattoria al Gatto Nero Via Giudecca, 88 - 30142 [link]
Pizzeria Trattoria Leon Coronato, Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi, 314, 30142

As a result, we went for lunch at the last pizzeria-trattoria.

We ordered 2 pastas, one with vongole and one with bolognese. My daughter ate a little bit of everyone + french fries + grissini breadsticks. We also ordered a decanter with mezzo litro of house white wine and a liter bottle of water.

The food is simple, homemade, but tasty and a little cheaper than in Venice.

My daughter remembered this day and the island, in the general stream of Venetian beauty, stood out as a bright spot. In memory of the island, they bought her a colored house magnet Pink colour correct shade)

Burano Island is a Venetian quarter located seven kilometers from the center of the city of Venice. This rainbow island with a population of about 4 thousand inhabitants is already visible from afar to the eyes of tourists with its riot of colors and unusualness. Burano was considered a separate city until 1923. A distinctive feature of the island quarter are brightly painted multi-colored houses, dazzling like a rainbow. The municipality of the city obliges the residents of Burano to renew the facades of houses with new paint every six months so that the color always retains its original appearance. It is imperative to paint in the previous color that existed earlier, and in order to change it to another, you need to get permission from the mayor's office.

There is a legend that tells why the houses began to be painted in different colors. This was done by housewives for their husbands, who went fishing in the sea, so that they could recognize the place of their native hearth from a long distance.

One of the main attractions of the island of Burano is the church of San Martino with a sloping crooked bell tower, reaching 52 meters in height and similar to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Among the famous natives of the island of Burano is a famous musical composer named Baldassare Galuppi, who worked and composed music at the court of Catherine II.

History of lace.

The island of Burano is considered the founder of a long tradition of lace making and has been famous for the production of lace products since the 16th century. According to assumptions, the Venetians borrowed technology from the eastern mediterranean countries. The 17th century is considered the era of the international boom in Buran lace, followed by a time of decline. The very first samples were characterized by a simple uncomplicated pattern, since needlewomen used only threads and a needle.

Over time, there was a development and complication of the technique of lace making, combining already weaving and sewing. Lace was considered to be of the highest quality and value, with a finer and more intricate pattern or design.

The middle of the 16th century was marked by the appearance of lace with biblical scenes, which were woven in the monastery by girls from families of a noble family. And in the 18th century, guipure appeared, which quickly became famous among those who loved fashionable novelties.

1872 - the time of the emergence of a school of lace needlewomen on the island of Burano, in which students were taught not only the skills of craftsmanship, but also the secrets of lace weaving.

The famous Venetian Lace Museum operates on the island, on three floors of which there are ancient exhibits of lace crafts and modern needlework, showing the history of the development of lace weaving in different periods. On the fourth floor of the museum, among the exhibits, you can see how tools for making handmade weaving patterns have been improved over time.

Photos and drawings of the island of Burano.

Situated in the lagoon. Today I want to invite you on a tour of Burano. I see no reason to hire a personal guide, the island is small, everything you need to see is located within walking distance, so let's go. So, what to see in Burano? Numerous world magazines emphasize that Burano is among the top ten colorful cities on earth. This is true. See:

I see an inaccuracy in such a statement, because Burano is small in order to be called a city, this locality, a multi-colored area that attracts and enchants tourists. The uniqueness of Burano is that the bright colors of the houses are repeatedly reflected in the waters of the canals, enhancing the variety of colors, mixing them with the color of the water, the sky, reflected in it. In my opinion, depression can be treated here. 🙂

I think that there is another reason that attracts travelers to the island - peace, regularity, slowness, relaxation, imperceptibly spilled in the air there. Burano seems to whisper softly: “Stop, look around, absorb, appreciate the moment, consider the place where you are from all sides.” There is no rush, no fuss, Burano is not familiar with the rhythm big city. It seems that he just lives, without planning anything and not thinking ahead. And, probably, for this reason, the day in Burano lasts a long time. Although half a day is enough for a tour of the island of Burano, during this time you can see everything. Here you can see the daily life of the inhabitants: here the fishermen sell the fish they caught last night, here the elderly Italian women weave the famous lace while talking, here the children run through, here someone is watering the flowers on the balcony of the house.

When you leave the boat on the pier, you find yourself in front of a green meadow on which the sculpture is installed. Its author is Remigio Barbaro.

You have the choice to lay your own excursion route: you can go straight to the center past the souvenir shops, or you can turn left to immediately dive into the multi-colored canal street.

No matter how you circle the island, you will certainly come to Piazza Galuppi, the only square in Burano where shops are located, and among them you will see those in which samples of Burano lace are exhibited:

The craftsmanship of the lacemakers of the island

Two productions are developed in Burano: lace and glassware. By the way, you can look at the work of a glassblower right in the store - a unique technique common in the lagoon:

How do you like glass caramel? 😉

On Piazza Galuppi is the Museum of Lace, Municipality, statue of B. Galuppi, authored by Remigio Barbaro.

Monument to Galuppi:

If you decide to spend the whole day or half a day on the island, you can dine in a typical trattoria offering fish dishes that use all the richness of the lagoon, fish and seafood from the local, open on Wednesday mornings, located on Via Diacente.

If you are limited in time, drop by the bar for 10 minutes to taste the local ice cream or the Esse, Bussolla sweets, which are also sold in pastry shops.

One of the famous houses in Burano "La casa di Bepi Sua", painted brightly and unusually, it seems to be divided into geometric figures of different sizes. There are other painted houses that do not have their own name, one of them:

An interesting place in Burano is "Tre ponti" - three bridges, a wooden bridge connecting three banks. You can take pictures from the bridge, choosing unique angles, for example, with a falling bell tower:

In the late afternoon, you can capture the sun setting behind an old fish shop.

Simple as that! In Burano, today delighting tourists with bright colors of houses, they once thought about how to highlight private property. Yes, it's about! 🙂 Here they decided to delimit the property, to separate one dwelling from another, even with the help of color.

You can come to the island of Burano from different points: from Venice - 45 minutes, from Treponti - 10 minutes, from Punta Sabbioni - 30 minutes. Today, 3,000 people live on the island. And on the islands of the lagoon - 60,000 people. Burano has 3 channels: Rio Ronticello, Rio Zuecca, Rio Terranova, 5 bridges - San Martino destro, San Martino sinistro, San Mauro, Terranova, Guicacca, connecting 5 parts of the island.

A bit of history. The first inhabitants of the lagoon saved their lives when they fled from the barbarians. The names of the islands, Burano, Torcello, Mazzorlo, Ammiana, Costanziaco are the names of the gates in Altino. The first buildings on the island of Burano were built hastily from reeds, for a fortress they were coated with clay. It is clear that they were light, consisted of one room, the inhabitants slept on the floor on a pile of dry leaves, and the floor was well-packed earth. Later brick houses appeared. During the times of the Venetian Republic, 8,000 people lived in Burano. These were poor people who earned their living by fishing and agriculture. They began to get rich thanks to lace weaving, which they also bought outside of present-day Italy.

And you can also get lost on the island to find typical Italian corners, completing the tour of Burano.

The small island of Burano, 7 kilometers from Venice, is a real miracle in a truly Venetian style - bright, catchy and unforgettable. When you see it, the association with the "explosion at the paint factory" comes to mind - the houses located on it are so diverse and dazzling.

In fact, Burano is one of the administrative quarters of Venice, it is inhabited by about 2,700 people (mostly of mature and advanced age), but every day from dawn to dusk, thousands of tourists flood the island to see the most memorable and recognizable colorful houses in the world.

They say that Burano is slowly dying out - a few natives, unable to withstand the isolated position of the island and the lack of the necessary infrastructure, leave it and move to the mainland or to Venice itself. Perhaps in the near future, Burano will become a 100% tourist "Potemkin village" - with empty houses, several restaurants for tourists, souvenir shops and selfie stands in the most picturesque points of the village. However, this, fortunately, has not happened so far, and having arrived here early in the morning and preferably at a “low” tourist season, you can still see the everyday quiet life of this beautiful island. So you have to hurry...

There is no need to study information about Burano (as before a meeting with Venice) and specially prepare for a visit here - this is the case when only visual enjoyment comes to the fore. Just enjoy the small, brightly colored houses, reflected in the neat canals, and the turquoise waters of the Adriatic that surround the island.

If neighboring and more large island Murano is known throughout the world for its glass-blowing production, then the symbol of Burano is lace, which was skillfully made by local craftswomen from about the 16th century. The production of lace has experienced its heyday and then decline, turning today into a craft performed to please and sell to tourists. At Piazza Galuppi in Burano, you can not only buy elegant napkins, shawls and lace clothes, but sometimes you can see with your own eyes the process of working on these works of Venetian art. The island also produces a special kind of Buran sweets.

How to get to Burano:

In Venice, from the Fondamente Nove pier (located in the northern part of the island) by vaporetto on route number 12, which connects Venice with the outer islands of the lagoon.

Route number 12 passes through the islands of Murano, Mazzorbo (connected to Burano by a bridge), Burano and further to Cavallino-Treporti.

The best departure time to the islands is in the morning, at 7.40, 8.10, 8.40 or 9.10 (later the number of tourists grows exponentially). The interval between vaporettos on this route is 30 minutes.

Travel time to Burano is 40 minutes, which fly by completely unnoticed during this easy and pleasant boat trip.

How long does it take to walk around Burano: about 2 hours. If you plan to visit Murano and Burano on the same day, plan at least 4-5 hours (half a day). If you want to explore every corner and go to every church, then you need to allocate a whole day to two islands.

Burano itself is a rather small island, consisting of four parts, separated by three channels. The first historical mention of it under the name "Burani" (Burani) dates back to 840 AD, however, the inhabitants of the ancient Roman city of Altino hid from the invasion of the barbarians of Atilla and the Lombards on the islands of the lagoon, including Burano, much earlier.

Attractions of the island of Burano:

Lace Museum;

Church of San Martino, lopsided in the style of the Leaning Tower of Pisa;

Home, home and more home.

Where the tradition of painting houses on Burano in bright colors came from is not known for certain. According to one version, each color symbolized a particular family in Burano and was a kind of “distinguishing mark”, according to another, boatmen painted houses in especially catchy colors to make it easier to find their own during impenetrable fog from the Adriatic, often enveloping the island. On Burano it was impossible (both before and today) to simply take and arbitrarily paint your house - this required permission from the local authorities.

Before traveling to Burano, I personally had a feeling of a certain theatricality of this island and I was afraid to be disappointed when I saw a semblance of decorated fake scenery. In addition, professional photographs of Burano often look overly processed and it is not clear what it really is. However, the reality not only did not disappoint, but many times exceeded expectations. All the photos in this article are without any processing, and there are a lot of them - simply because it is impossible to choose the best, all the views of the island of Burano are simply beautiful.

Perhaps the charm of Burano was revealed to us in full force due to the lack of crowds of tourists - in the photo the island from the morning of January 6 is the lowest season for Venice: the Christmas holidays are already over, and the main winter event in Venice, carnival, is still far away.

Some buildings are painted in the style of "pull out the eye", some are designed in soft pastel colors, but there is never a feeling of inharmoniousness of the surrounding space.

Christmas Santa Clauses, or Babbo Natale in Italian, are still out to deliver gifts to their recipients.

Incredibly beautiful reflections of houses in the canals.

Buransky lace is one of the main local souvenirs. Evil tongues claim that "the king is not real" - made in China. I don't know how true this is.

This house on the right, painted in a pale green color, struck me on the spot and became, perhaps, the most memorable among all the buildings in Buranovo.

On the central square Baldassare Galuppi is the church of San Martino of the XVI century (Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo) with a 53-meter bell tower - campanile. Campanile has already squinted rather, which is visible, however, only from some angles.

Inside the church, pay attention to the work "Crucifixion" by one of the "great Venetians" - Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

In the church, the Christmas nativity scene still remained unassembled.

Local residents, mostly of advanced age, rush about their business early in the morning, apparently in a hurry to catch it before tourists flood in. Although in any direction to Burano - 10 minutes maximum at a leisurely pace.

View of neighboring island Torcello.

"Explosion at the paint factory" - such a headline for an article about Burano came to my mind right here.

Unchanging Italian shorts are dried, as expected, on the street.

Elderly Italian gentlemen decided to move the boat somewhere.

There are "Buranovskie grandmothers", and there are also "Buranovskie cats".
