The island of Ios is the maritime beauty of Greece. What is the island of Ios in Greece

ios- picturesque Greek island in the southern part of the Aegean. Here is preserved unique nature, original culture, monuments of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Ios, which the locals call Nyo, is one of the 200 islands of the Cyclades archipelago. Ios is 18 kilometers long from north to south and 10 kilometers wide from east to west. At the moment, just over 1800 people live here permanently. The ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the author of the Odyssey and the Iliad, the poet Homer, was buried on the island of Ios.

Attractions in Ios

Ancient buildings of the Hellenistic era, preserved on the island of Ios Most of them are now in ruins. However, what remains of them allows us to imagine the former grandeur of local architecture. Of interest is the tower and the ancient plumbing in the town of Agia Theodoti, the ruins of the temple in Psathi and another tower in Plakoto. In Paleokastro, the ruins of a Venetian fortress have been preserved.

ios has a convenient harbor from which ferries and high-speed catamarans leave for the sea. The mainland of Greece can be reached by ferry in seven hours, the cost of the trip is approximately 30 euros. A high-speed catamaran will take you to the port of Piraeus in 5.5 hours, but it will cost more - 50 euros. Closest to Ios are Naxos, Santorini and Folegandros, the journey time by ferry is only an hour and a half. Regular buses run around the island itself in summer, and you can also rent a car, motorcycle or scooter. The cost of this service starts from 30 euros per day.

Holidays in Ios

ios called the “party” resort of the Cyclades archipelago, during the high tourist season in the capital of the island, the city of Chora, you can meet young people from all over the world. Nightlife began to develop here in the 70s of the last century, when the island was chosen by hippies. Since then, connoisseurs of discos, entertainment and a permanent holiday come here from all over the world. The most popular nightclubs in Ios are Scorpion, Dream Nightclub, Rehab, Kandi and Finari. Also attractive are the prices for food and alcohol, which are significantly lower than on other Greek islands.

Milopotska Bay is located not far from Chora. amazing beauty and a gorgeous white sand beach. Great beaches are located near the villages of Manganari, Kalamasa, Plakes, Dzamaria, Kolitsani, Agia Theodori and Psafi. Most of them have all the conditions for water sports: diving, snorkeling, water skiing.

Although Ios is not so different in architectural and geographical terms from its immediate neighbors, no other island attracts so many young people. Trying to give the truth mass tourism a more austere look: houses are now painted white with a blue border to replace the former psychedelic riot of colours, overnight camping is discouraged anywhere, and a law has been enacted that dine-in establishments close earlier than anywhere else (no later than 3 a.m., except Fridays and Saturdays), so you won’t be able to have fun in the bars until the morning.

But young travelers with backpacks are still drawn here, and in the summer they capture Ios completely, - in the rest of the year, the violent youth is diluted with more sedate: more and more young families go here on vacation. All the villages that can be called villages - Yialos, Chora and Mylopotamos, occupy one small corner of the island, and the development of its other parts is partly hampered by bad roads. As a result, until now, many of the local beaches are very quiet and there are few rooms for rent. Gialos has a beautiful natural harbor, one of the best and safest on the island, with a paved walking esplanade.

Most guests stay close to the port - in Gialos, where you arrive (there is no airport), or in Chora above it, or by the beach in Mylopotamos. This area is small and you will soon want to get to know the island better. All the time scurrying buses connect the villages of Kumbara, Yialos, Chora and Mylopotamos, flights daily, from about 8:00 am to midnight. In summer, you won’t have to wait longer than 15 minutes for a bus; in extreme cases, you can walk uphill (or downhill) along the path between Gialos and Chora.

Buses from various travel agencies also go to the beaches in Manganari and Agia Theodoti, but tickets for them are sold both ways and at slightly inflated prices (6 €). Rental agencies such as Jacob’s Car and Bike Rental in Yialos or Vangelis Bike Rental in Chora will help you get your own vehicle, but unlike many other islands, you will need a valid motorcycle license here.

Motorboats are rented out by the Mylopotamos firm los Boat Rental, which asks for nothing more than a credit card. If you get bored with the atmosphere of a remote party that reigns on the island at the height of the season, then to escape from it, go on an excursion to one of the nearby quiet beaches, where you will be taken from the harbor by a beautiful sailboat Leigh Browne (20 €). The once popular campsites on the beaches of Ios are now frowned upon, and with theft rampant, it's best to stick to the official campsites.

Buses turn left from the Yialos promenade, and Yialos beach - surprisingly peaceful and not crowded - is only a 5-minute walk in the same direction. Upon arrival in Gialos, you can rent a room in this village: the homeowners meet the incoming ferries, and there are two kiosks at the pier where you can.

The Mare Monte hotel, about halfway from the beach, has spacious, clean rooms, a small pool, and the price of the room includes the price of breakfast. About 300 meters up the road to Chora, one of the best options: family owned hotel Golden Sun with a large swimming pool and behind the hospital is the recently refurbished Yialos Beach with good double rooms and a studio around the swimming pool.

On the way along the stepped path from Yialos to Hora, rooms for rent are also offered, but at night it can be noisy. Camping los Camping is friendly and clean, and its pool is perhaps even luxurious. Yialos also has a decent supermarket and several taverns. In a small coffee house Octopus Tree, at the pier with fishing boats, they serve fresh seafood caught by the owner, and the neighboring Enigma is a warm, familiar place with Cypriot dishes.

A pleasant walk deep into the port (20 minutes) - and in front of you is Chora (or the city of Ios), one of the most picturesque villages in the Cyclades, with winding streets, arcades and whitewashed churches, although in the high season, when it is filled with a youth crowd, the place does not call quiet. The chorus is divided into two parts: Old city, climbing the hill, is on the left when you enter the city, and new buildings are on the right. The Archaeological Museum (Tuesday-Sunday 8:30-15:00; 2 €) appeared in the yellow town hall building as one of the measures to attract more diverse categories of tourists to the island.

in the theater under open sky The Odyssey of Elytis - behind the windmills - plays and concerts look great, information about which you can find at the travel agency and at the information desk near the archaeological museum. In the old part of the city, modest rooms are rented, although it can be noisy - there are enough bars nearby. The best strategy for finding quiet is to turn left, where you will find several places to stay, including excellent Francesco's - the best value on the island, with clean double rooms, few shared bedrooms (12 € per person) and amazing views from the bar . At the bus stop is a newer hotel, the Mediterraneo: beautiful rooms with balconies overlooking the swimming pool.

Lofos Pension in the area of new buildings - to the right of the Rollan supermarket - is also a good choice. Friendly guesthouse Four Seasons The Pension, above Vangelis Bike Rental, is both quiet and central. Every summer evening turns Hora into a hotspot for nightlife: music from discos and bars is heard everywhere, where admission is mostly free or nominal, and drinks are inexpensive (be on the lookout for absolutely cheap ones: some unscrupulous businessmen offer a local drink called a bomb from which you will get drunk in an instant, but then you will feel very bad, if in doubt, be interested in the brand and origin).

Most of the smaller bars and pubs are pushed into the cheerful narrow streets of the old part of the village on the hill, and everyone can find something for themselves, and the search for such establishments is not difficult. People in the know start the evening at a place like the Fun Pub, which often plays movies for free, has a pool table, and then moves from pub to pub, ending up in the bowels of the old city by midnight, where Rehab, Flames and Red Bull Bar are especially in demand.

On the main street, near the bus stop, there is a cluster of large dance clubs, including Scorpion and the rather kitsch Sweet Irish Dream. There are not so many taverns here, but there are enough cheap and cheerful psistaries and establishments where food is given out with them. More expressive options are Pinocchio Italian Restaurant, The Nest Tavern and Lord Byron mezedhopolio diner, in the alley on the left side of the old district, open all year round and carefully recreating the traditional atmosphere: rebetika music and good and unusual Greek dishes.

On the island of Ios

Most often, bus passengers get off at the Mylopotamos stop (abbreviated name - Mylopotas), striving for a magnificent beach with conditions for water sports mini-resort, all necessary for which is available at Meltemi Extreme Watersports, located on Manganari Beach. Since many young people come to the island, camping sites flourish. The largest of them is Far Out beach club, with many services including a reasonably priced cafeteria and a bar (a good place to hang out even if you're not camping). Keep in mind, however, that in August it is very crowded and noisy. The campsite has a Far Out Village hotel.

The friendlier and more relaxed Purple Pig Stars on the way up Chora offers cozy bungalows and has its own club and pool bar. Nearby is the attractive and luxurious Dionysos Hotel. On the road at the far end of the beach, the French-run hotel los Plage (June-September) offers nice, modern rooms, excellent French cuisine in the terrace restaurant. There are boats from Yialos to Manganari, south coast(daily, departure around 10 a.m., return in the afternoon; 12 € round trip) - there is a beach and a hotel, but you can also take a motor scooter.

You can also get to Manganari by private buses provided by travel agencies (€6 round trip): they leave Yialos at about 11 o'clock, call in Chora and Mylopotamos and return in the late afternoon, however, the roads are such that the way by sea is preferable. Previously, nudism reigned on the beach, now the authorities are trying to stop it, but not too successful. A more pleasant place is Ayia Teodoti, on east coast. An asphalt road leads there through the entire island and walks tour bus(daily; 3 € return).

A couple of kilometers from Ayia Teodoti to the south is Paleokastro, the ruins of a Venetian castle and the remains of a marble-clad city and a Byzantine church. If - which is unlikely - there are too many people on the beach (mostly nudist), try to get to Psati, 14 kilometers to the southeast, but you will need your own transport. This resort was chosen by wealthy Athenians and therefore the local average taverns are overpriced, although the moderately priced fish tavern Alonistra is a pleasant exception.

Another decent beach - Kalamos - you will get by taking the bus to Manganari and getting off at the turn to Kalamos, after which you will have to walk 4 kilometers. The so-called "Tomb of Homer" is best reached by scooter on a safe dirt road (first along the highway to Ayia Teodoti, then turn left after 4.5 kilometers from Chora). The ancient town has long crumbled from the cliff, but the ruins of the entrance to the mausoleum and some burials have survived, including the one where, according to legend, Homer is buried, although in fact all these ruins are by no means older than the Byzantine era.
